There's not a medal won or a performance made at the Olympics without the caveat of it being 'historic', then only moments later for it to be surpassed by something ever so slightly more current. But what of those athletes who are failing to mark the annals of time, the plain ordinary, the ones who couldn't find the extra? Surely we are all making history, in our own eyes at least. Everything is historic, something that happened in the past.
Us mortals may not make history, but what we do is to make memories...remember that training session last night, the one where we just about hung on to the back of group 1 and were so totally bollocksed we all failed to utter a single word to each other except exchange a look and a virtual nod that summarised the just how special that moment was...or the recollection of a stunning morning in the Carrs, sun poking through the trees...
...illuminating a low hanging mist that had gathered in the dips, the freshness of the air, honest sweat dripping from your nose. These are memorable moments. Significant memories or not, they are thoughts we either recall with ease, or let slip, failing to recognise what a true moment that was. Others we elect to block, striking them from the history books. Denial. History is over, making memories is the future.
